1. The Concept
The International theatre festival of modern dramaturgy named after Alexander Vampilov is comparatively young. The festival is named after Alexander Vampilov, the famous Russian play writer that had died when he was 35 years old in 1972. Despite the fact that he was young, the depth of his works can be compared with such great Russian writers like Tolstoy, Chekhov, or Dostoevsky.
The term “modern dramaturgy” could excite many young authors and stage managers to forget about the past with laugh and replace the suffering reality with slang, violence, deconstruction, artifacts, pop-versions of classic, etc. Therefore, we ask theatres, who would like to be a participant of the festival, to remember its responsibility to audience and true theatre traditions.
We don’t require the participants of the festival to suffer, judge, divine, or weep about our world, but to see contemporary, modern life throughout theatre. We want our participants not to pronounce the feelings, but try to feel truly; not to quibble, but to indue these words with value and sense.
We are waiting in Irkutsk theaters who share such understanding of contemporary and responsible culture.
